Price cold process, hot process, melt and pour, and rebatch soap honestly. Oil blend cost + lye + fragrance + real labor across the batch. Outputs per-bar retail and wholesale.
Step 1 of 4: Method + oils
Pick a method and the batch size. Cold and hot process start with oils + lye. Melt and pour starts with a pre-saponified base (no lye). Rebatch re-melts scraps from previous batches.
Standard 2lb loaf mold uses 32oz of oils. Slab mold typically 48-64oz. Silicone cavity molds vary.
Weighted average across your oils. Basic 3-oil blend ~$0.20-$0.25/oz. Luxury shea/almond blends $0.35-$0.50/oz. M&P goat-milk base $0.42/oz.
Step 1 of 4
The soap cost stack
Every batch of cold-process soap has six material lines plus labor and overhead. For a standard 2lb loaf (32oz of oils) the shape of the stack looks like this:
| Line item | Batch cost | Per bar (10 bars) |
|---|---|---|
| Oils (32oz × $0.22) | $7.04 | $0.70 |
| Lye | $1.00 | $0.10 |
| Fragrance (4%, 1.28oz × $2.10) | $2.69 | $0.27 |
| Colorant (mica + titanium) | $1.50 | $0.15 |
| Materials subtotal | $12.23 | $1.22 |
| Labor (60 min × $25) | $25.00 | $2.50 |
| Overhead | $2.00 | $0.20 |
| Per-bar packaging | – | $0.60 |
| Per-bar cost | $4.52 |
At 100% markup: retail $9/bar. At keystone-ready 150% markup to support wholesale: retail $11-$12/bar, wholesale $5.50-$6/bar.
Three pricing mistakes that wreck soap shops
1. Not charging for the full active-time batch. Cold-process soap takes an hour of real work: weighing oils, mixing lye water, blending to trace, pouring, texturing the top, cleanup. Add cutting and labeling two days later. If you only count "the pour," you underprice your time by 60%.
2. Underestimating packaging. Shrink wrap + ingredient label + scent card + maybe a kraft paper band adds up to $0.60-$0.90 per bar. Soap shops that miss this line item ship at $0.30 instead of $0.80 and lose half the expected margin.
3. Pricing against craft-fair singles. A farmer selling basic bar soap from a 40lb batch at $5 is not your benchmark. Your hand-crafted signature bars need to reflect your cost structure, not the commodity market. Price for your niche customer, not the shelf average.
