Price handmade candles honestly. Wax + fragrance oil + vessel + wick + labor at your hourly rate + a real margin. Preset vessels and common wax types for a fast first pass; edit any input with your actual supplier numbers.
Step 1 of 4: Wax
Pick a wax type. Defaults below are typical retail prices from CandleScience and Flaming Candle. If you buy in 50lb slabs, your per-oz cost is lower; override the field with your actual supplier price.
For an 8oz vessel, net wax weight is roughly 6-8 oz depending on shrinkage. For a 16oz mason, expect 12-14 oz.
Retail: soy ~$0.32/oz, coconut-apricot ~$0.58/oz, beeswax ~$0.95/oz. Bulk wholesale drops these by 20-30%.
Step 1 of 4
The cost buckets in a handmade candle
Every candle has five material inputs (wax, fragrance, wick, vessel, packaging) plus labor and overhead. Most new candlemakers overcount materials and undercount labor. The honest picture usually looks like this for an 8oz soy tin:
| Line item | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Wax (8oz × $0.32/oz) | $2.56 | GW 464 soy retail price |
| Fragrance (0.64oz × $2.10/oz) | $1.34 | 8% load, standard fragrance |
| Wick (CD series) | $0.15 | Wooden wicks run $0.30-$0.50 |
| 8oz tin vessel | $1.45 | Retail price; wholesale ~$1.00 |
| Label + shrink band + box | $0.80 | Packaging compound |
| Materials subtotal | $6.30 | |
| Labor (15 min × $25/hr) | $6.25 | Heat, pour, wick, label, pack |
| Overhead | $0.30 | Heat, space, amortized equipment |
| Total cost | $12.85 |
At 75% margin, recommended retail is $22.49. Round to $22. This is the number that covers Etsy's 11% fee cut while still paying your labor honestly.
Wax choice has the biggest margin impact
Soy (GW 464) is the workhorse at $0.32/oz retail. Coconut-apricot runs $0.58/oz but markets as premium and supports $4-$8 higher retail. Beeswax at $0.95/oz is a luxury category with a 100%+ markup expectation built in. Paraffin is cheapest ($0.24/oz) but has lost market share to "clean burn" soy and coconut blends; on Etsy specifically, most buyers filter paraffin out.
The margin math: switching from soy to coconut-apricot on an 8oz candle adds roughly $2.08 to materials ($0.26/oz × 8oz) but opens $6-$10 of additional retail because the market sees coconut-apricot as premium. That is the single biggest margin lever available to a small candle shop.
Three worked examples
8oz soy tin at standard fragrance. Wax $2.56, fragrance $1.34, wick $0.15, tin $1.45, packaging $0.80, labor $6.25, overhead $0.30 = $12.85. At 75% margin: $22.49 → list at $22.
16oz soy mason at 9% fragrance load. Wax 14oz × $0.32 = $4.48. Fragrance 1.26oz × $2.10 = $2.65. Wick $0.25. Mason jar $2.80. Packaging $1.10. Labor 18 min × $25 = $7.50. Overhead $0.40. Total $19.18. At 75% margin: $33.57 → list at $34.
11oz Libbey coconut-apricot at premium pricing. Wax 10oz × $0.58 = $5.80. Fragrance 1oz × $2.40 = $2.40. Wick $0.22. Libbey $3.20. Packaging $1.40. Labor 18 min × $30/hr = $9.00. Overhead $0.45. Total $22.47. At 100% margin: $44.94 → list at $44 or $46. This is the gift-market price point where coconut-apricot justifies the premium.
Five common pricing mistakes
1. Not charging labor. Candles look "quick" because pour time is 3 minutes, but the real minutes-per-candle when you count weighing, cleanup, curing inspection, and labeling is 12-20. Pay yourself for all of it.
2. Pricing by the case. Wholesale costs on 96-unit cases look great until you notice you are sitting on $1,400 of inventory cash. Price retail at 1lb-bag wax cost, not case cost, until your volume reliably pulls through the case.
3. Low margin during launch. Every new candle shop undercuts to build reviews. Do this at 60% margin, not 30%. Below 60% you cannot pay yourself AND absorb Etsy fees AND survive a bad month.
4. Matching mass-market prices. Bath & Body Works 3-wick at $25 is not your competition. The handmade candle buyer is already willing to pay more for a story; you do not need to undercut the big-box chain. Price for the customer who chose to shop handmade.
5. No seasonal adjustment. Holiday pricing on candles runs 10-15% higher than spring. Adjust in late September, revert in January. Same candle, different market.
Pair this with the Etsy fee + hourly rate calculators
The recommended price here is gross retail before Etsy takes its cut. Run a specific sale through the Etsy fee calculator to see net-after-fees. If your hourly rate feels low, the maker hourly rate calculator backs into the rate your take-home target actually requires.
