Soap has the tightest real-cost ratio of any handmade category. A cold-process bar that costs $2.10 in oils plus lye plus fragrance feels like it should sell for $4. The market agrees, which is why handmade soap is one of the harder Etsy niches to scale. These tools surface what you need to actually earn a profit instead of subsidizing buyers.

Cost math that trips up new soap shops
Yield is not bar count
A 2lb loaf is 32oz. After curing (water loss of ~8-12%), you land at roughly 28-29oz of finished soap. Cut at 4oz per bar, that is 7 bars, not the 8 the raw math suggests. Skipping the cure-loss factor overstates yield by ~12% and inflates your profit on paper.
Oil blend cost compounds
Cheapest blends (pure tallow, or lard + olive + coconut) run $0.12-$0.16/oz. Luxury blends with shea butter, avocado oil, or cocoa butter hit $0.22-$0.35/oz. A 32oz loaf batch with a luxury blend starts at $7-$11 before lye, fragrance, and colorant. That shifts your per-bar baseline dramatically.
Cure time is not free
Cold-process soap cures 4-6 weeks before it is safe to sell. That means you front-load materials cost and pay for warehouse space (even a spare bedroom) before seeing any revenue. Sellers running on credit card float get burned here. Either keep 2 months of batch rotation ready or move to hot-process which cures in 1-2 weeks.
Shipping destroys margin on solo bars
A single bar in a padded mailer costs $4-$6 to ship USPS Ground Advantage. That is 30-50% of the retail price. Shops that survive either ship bundles (3-pack, 5-pack) or focus on local / wholesale channels where shipping is simplified.
