Printful vs Printify vs Gelato: Which Makes You More Per Sale?
Every POD seller eventually asks the same question: if I switch providers, will I make more per sale? The answer is yes, usually between $2 and $4 more per tee, but the winner is not the same for every situation. Printful beats Printify on quality. Printify beats Printful on price. Gelato beats both on international orders. What looks like a provider preference is really three different economic answers to three different questions.
This guide runs the actual margin math across Printful, Printify, and Gelato on four common products at US and international destinations. Real base costs, real shipping rates, real decision frameworks. By the end you will know which provider fits your shop and when to mix them.

Why this comparison matters
Provider choice on POD is not a branding question. It is a margin question that compounds every sale. A $3 difference per tee does not sound like much until you multiply it by 500 sales per month. That is $1,500 of monthly margin sitting on the wrong side of a routing decision you make once and never revisit.
Most POD shops start on Printful because it is the first name they hear. After 100 sales they might hear about Printify savings and wonder if they should switch. After their first international order goes sideways they hear about Gelato. What they rarely do is run the actual numbers on their specific catalog against all three providers at once.
This guide is the running-the-numbers exercise, shared publicly so you can apply it to your shop directly.

Domestic pattern: Printify wins on price, Printful wins on quality-per-dollar, Gelato wins on speed and international. No single winner for every scenario.
Head-to-head: base cost structure
The first input in the margin comparison is base cost, which is what the provider charges you before shipping, before Etsy fees, before anything else. Base cost IS your cost of goods in POD. You cannot negotiate it, discount it, or reduce it. You can only choose which provider's base cost to accept.
The base-cost gap between providers is real
Printify is 15 to 30% cheaper across the catalog. That becomes 50% of your margin on tight sales.

Base costs only. Add shipping (see next chart) for the full picture. Gelato costs more domestic but wins big on international.
Adult tees (Bella+Canvas 3001). Printify at $6.75 is the cheapest. Printful at $8.50 adds 26%. Gelato at $9.20 adds 36%. Over 500 tee sales, you pay $1,225 more in base cost on Gelato versus Printify. Same shirt.
11oz ceramic mugs. Printify at $5.50, Printful at $7.95, Gelato at $8.50. The mug gap is even wider than the tee gap percentage-wise. Printify is 44% cheaper on mugs than Printful.
Pullover hoodies. Printify at $18.50, Printful at $24.95, Gelato at $27.00. The dollar gap is the biggest here: $8.50 between Printify and Gelato. On 100 hoodie sales, that is $850 of direct margin difference.
Posters (18x24). Printify at $7.80, Printful at $9.95, Gelato at $10.50. Smaller absolute spread but the same percentage story.
“Printify is not cheaper because they cut corners. They aggregate dozens of print providers, and the competition between providers pushes base costs down. You pay less because someone else is doing the work at scale.”
Shipping: the hidden margin killer
Base cost is the obvious provider difference. Shipping is the one that trips up new POD sellers. All three providers add a shipping charge that deducts from your margin. On a free-shipping listing, your retail has to absorb both the item cost and the shipping cost.
For US domestic, the ranking holds: Printify slightly cheaper, Printful middle, Gelato highest. But for international shipments, the math flips completely because of where each provider prints.
Shipping economics flip internationally
Printify wins domestic US. Gelato wins everything else thanks to its local print network.

The international takeaway: if 20%+ of your sales go overseas, Gelato saves you $5 to $9 per international sale compared to Printful/Printify. That beats the domestic cost disadvantage.
US → US. Printify wins by $0.70 to $1 per order. Small on its own, meaningful at volume.
US → UK. Gelato wins by $5 to $8 per order because they print locally in the UK. Printful and Printify ship from US fulfillment, which means long transit times plus expensive international shipping. If 20% of your sales are UK, switching those orders to Gelato saves $1,000+ per month.
US → Australia. Gelato wins by $6 to $9 per order. Australia is particularly bad on US-shipped POD because of long transit (10 to 21 days) and heavy customs fees.
US → Canada. Gelato narrowly wins. Printful is decent here too because they have a Canadian warehouse. Printify is the worst for Canada because most of their providers are US-only.
Quality differences that actually matter
The "cheapest provider wins" argument breaks when quality problems produce returns. A return costs you the sale, the shipping cost, the restocking, and the negative review. Etsy weights reviews heavily in search ranking, so one bad review can cost you 10 sales of search visibility.
Printful print quality. Consistent, mostly because they own their fulfillment operation. DTG tees come out with accurate colors and reliable placement. Mugs hold up to dishwashers. Posters are print-shop quality. You pay 25% more in base cost but you return less.
Printify print quality. Varies by provider. The aggregator model means your print could come from any one of their contracted providers depending on your settings. Monster Digital, SwiftPOD, and their Gildan partners produce Printful-level quality. The cheaper providers produce noticeably worse work. Vet which providers you use.
Gelato print quality. Strong across the board. Their local print network is vetted by Gelato directly, and the European print shops tend to be higher-end than US POD averages. Color accuracy is particularly good on posters and wall art.
Printify quality is a setup decision, not a random outcome
When you connect a design to Printify, you choose which print provider in their network fulfills it. Pick carefully. If you pick the cheapest option blindly, you will get cheap results. The extra $0.50 per unit for a premium provider in the network is always worth it.
Worked example: same $22 tee on each provider
Let us walk through the exact numbers. Same listing, same Etsy fees, same retail, same buyer in Ohio. Only the provider changes.
Same $22 tee sale, three different takeaways
Printify clears $8.84. Printful clears $6.39. Gelato clears $4.88. Same work on your side.

The $3.96 spread: over 500 sales, choosing Printify over Gelato is $1,980 of additional take-home on US-focused catalog. Provider choice is a real business decision, not a branding decision.
Printful path: Customer pays $22. Etsy takes $2.42 in fees (11%). Printful deducts $8.50 base + $4.69 shipping = $13.19. Net to your account: $6.39.
Printify path: Same $22, same $2.42 Etsy fees. Printify deducts $6.75 base + $3.99 shipping = $10.74. Net: $8.84.
Gelato path: Same $22, same $2.42 Etsy fees. Gelato deducts $9.20 base + $5.50 shipping = $14.70. Net: $4.88.
The spread between best (Printify $8.84) and worst (Gelato $4.88) is $3.96. That is not a margin difference. That is an additional 38% of your net margin sitting on the wrong side of a provider choice.
International orders change everything
The domestic analysis above uses a US buyer. If your buyer is in London, the math reverses dramatically.
Printful UK order. $22 retail, $2.42 Etsy fees, $8.50 base + $9.50 international ship = $18.00 provider cost. Net: $1.58. You are working for almost nothing.
Printify UK order. $22 retail, $2.42 fees, $6.75 base + $12.25 international ship = $19.00 provider cost. Net: $0.58. You are losing money if there are any unexpected costs.
Gelato UK order. $22 retail, $2.42 fees, $9.20 base + $4.50 local UK ship = $13.70 provider cost. Net: $5.88. You are in reasonable margin territory.
On international orders specifically, Gelato is the only provider that keeps the math working on a $22 tee. Printful and Printify require $28 to $32 retail minimum to stay profitable abroad.
“If your catalog sells internationally at all, Gelato is not optional. It is the only provider that makes overseas orders profitable without raising your base retail by $8.”
The scorecard: where each provider actually wins
No single provider wins on every criterion. The honest answer is that each optimizes different things, and the right choice depends on which criteria matter most to your shop.

Printful wins when
Quality matters most, you need reliable customer service, and you list premium-priced designs.
Printify wins when
Unit margin matters most, you sell US-only, and you can vet print providers in the network.
Gelato wins when
International sales are 20%+ of your volume, or you specifically target the EU and UK market.
Printful is the premium choice. 9/10 on print quality, 9/10 on customer service, 9/10 on Etsy integration. You pay 25% more in base cost and you get a shop that runs with fewer surprises. Best for shops that prioritize quality perception and list at premium retail.
Printify is the volume choice. 9/10 on base cost, 10/10 on product range, 8/10 on Etsy integration. You save $2 to $4 per sale and you accept that you need to vet print providers in their network. Best for high-volume US-focused shops.
Gelato is the international choice. 10/10 on international, 8/10 on print quality, 7/10 on US shipping. Their global network changes the shipping math abroad. Best for shops with 20%+ international traffic or those specifically targeting EU/UK markets.
The hybrid strategy (what most serious shops actually do)
After 100+ sales, most POD shops stop picking "one provider" and start routing by scenario. Here is the framework that experienced sellers use.
Hybrid routing strategy by scenario
| Scenario | Provider | Why |
|---|---|---|
| US tee orders, standard designs | Printify | $2.45 more per sale vs Printful |
| US hoodie orders, premium designs | Printful | Quality perception matches the higher price point |
| UK / EU orders, any product | Gelato | Local print saves $5 to $8 in shipping |
| Canadian orders | Gelato | Marginal cost winner + fastest local ship |
| Specialty products (AOP, tote bags) | Printful | Most consistent quality in these categories |
| Mugs | Printify | Biggest cost gap, lowest stakes on quality perception |
Start with one, add the second when you need it
Do not set up three providers on day one. Pick one based on your primary market (Printful for premium, Printify for volume, Gelato for EU). Run 50+ sales to learn the workflow. Then add a second provider specifically for the scenario your first provider handles poorly. Third provider joins at 500+ sales if the math supports it.
Which should I start with?
If you are new to POD and have no specific market direction yet, start with Printful. The quality floor, customer service, and Etsy integration are worth the base-cost premium while you are learning. Once you have 100 sales and understand your product mix, reevaluate.
If you already know your catalog is US-focused and price-competitive, start with Printify. The base cost savings go directly to margin. Be deliberate about which print provider you connect each listing to.
If you know your audience is international (UK fashion niche, EU gift-market, Australia-based followers), start with Gelato. The shipping savings alone justify the higher base cost.
Run your own numbers in the calculator
Every provider updates their base costs and shipping rates quarterly. The POD margin calculator pulls current rates and lets you compare your specific catalog across all three providers for your specific destination mix.
Five provider-switching mistakes to avoid
1. Switching based on base cost alone. Base cost is one input. Shipping, quality, and return rates all matter. A $2 cheaper base cost that produces a 15% return rate is not saving money.
2. Not testing quality before migrating listings. Order one sample of your own product from the new provider before routing customer orders there. Every POD seller has a drawer of self-ordered samples from three providers. It is cheaper than learning quality issues via customer complaints.
3. Ignoring the Etsy integration UX. Printify integration sometimes lags on inventory sync. Gelato integration is newer and has gaps. Printful is the smoothest. If you do not have time to troubleshoot integration issues, the integration quality matters as much as the margin.
4. Not adjusting retail when you switch. If Printify saves you $2.45 per sale, you have two options: keep the same retail and take the extra margin, or drop retail slightly to be more price-competitive. Both are valid but you have to choose deliberately.
5. Switching mid-busy-season. Every provider has occasional fulfillment issues. Do not migrate from Printful to Printify in November. Wait for January. Learn the new workflow during a slow month before trusting it with your holiday rush.
