Blank cost
$1.50 to $3.25 depending on size and thickness
Retail range
$10 to $22 retail at 55% to 80% margin
Production time
4 to 7 active minutes per mouse pad
Mouse pads are the highest-margin accessory in sublimation. Blanks are $2, ink is $0.60, labor is five minutes. They retail $12 to $18 for standard size. The margin math is better than anything except keychains. For a shop looking to add a cheap accessory SKU that bolts onto existing printer and press capacity, mouse pads are the answer.
The catch is volume. Buyers do not shop Etsy for mouse pads the way they shop for tumblers. You sell mouse pads as gift-bundle add-ons ("matching mouse pad with your custom mug") or as promotional items for corporate gift orders. Standalone mouse pad shops exist but are rare.
This page covers mouse pad pricing with sublimation. HTV on mouse pads does not work well because the surface is textured; sublimation is the standard.

What a mouse pad actually costs to produce
Blank cost varies by size. Standard 9.25 x 7.75 inch pads run $1.50 to $2.50 at case quantity from Heat Transfer Warehouse, Conde, and SubliCrest. Gaming size (12 x 10 inches) runs $2.75 to $3.75. Large desk mats (31 x 15 inches) run $8 to $12 and are a separate category with different retail economics.
Ink usage is low because coverage is often partial (logo or image in the center, borders plain). Typical 25% coverage sublimation print costs $0.55 on SG500. Paper $0.15. Other materials $0.05 (just prep wipes).
Active labor: 2 minutes prep (cut paper, align), 2 minutes press (flat press), 1 minute pack (flat in poly mailer). Total 5 minutes single, 3 minutes batched in a large-format press. Very efficient product for volume shops.
Full per-pad cost breakdown
Materials $2.60 (blank $2, paper $0.15, ink $0.55, other $0.05, packaging $0.15). Labor $2.08 on 5 min at $25/hr. Overhead $0.15. Total cost $4.83.
At 65% margin retail $7.97. Most Etsy mouse pad listings sit $12 to $18. Net after Etsy fees and $3 shipping label on a $15 sale is $5.50, or 30% net. Highest net margin of any sublimation product category.
Worked example: pricing a custom mouse pad
Standard 9.25x7.75 pad at $2. Paper $0.15, ink $0.55, other $0.05, poly mailer $0.15. Materials $2.90. 5 min labor at $25/hr = $2.08. Overhead $0.15. Total cost $5.13.
At 65% margin retail $8.46. List at $14 with $3 shipping. Gross $17. Etsy fees $1.90. Shipping label $3. Net $6.97, or 41% net. Extremely strong.
For a gaming-size pad at $3.25 blank, retail at $22 and net approaches $10. For a desk mat at $10 blank, retail at $35 to $45 and net $15 to $20 per sale.
Where to buy mouse pad blanks
Heat Transfer Warehouse and Conde Systems carry standard and gaming sizes. SubliCrest offers larger desk mats. Photo USA and JDS Industries stock specialty shapes (round, molded, rubber-back). Amazon sellers offer case-of-100 standard pads at $1.25 to $1.50 per unit but quality varies.
For professional gaming mats, SubliCrest and JDS have thicker polyester-topped options with sewn edges. These blanks cost $5 to $8 and retail $30 to $45 on Etsy. A premium niche for shops with a gaming customer base.
