In our 2026 Seller Survey, $35 is the price point where retail Etsy margin and boutique wholesale margin cross. At $35 retail, Etsy nets $30.93; the equivalent boutique wholesale ($17.50 per unit) nets $15.90 after labor. Etsy wins by $15.

The Crafter Margin 2026 Seller Survey (n=218) had 29 respondents who sell through both Etsy and local boutiques. We asked them to share real per-unit economics. At a $35 retail price, Etsy cleared $30.93 to the seller after fees. That same product wholesaled to a boutique at $17.50 (standard 50% keystone) netted $15.90 after per-unit labor and materials attribution.

That $15 per-unit gap is the reason shops default to Etsy retail until volume forces the decision. But the math flips around $50 retail: wholesale at $25 starts to look reasonable if the boutique commits to 40+ units per order and removes the per-sale fulfillment labor. The $35 tier is the break-even: Etsy retail wins on per-unit dollars but loses on time-per-sale.

The shops that do both well tend to use Etsy for $28 to $38 retail work and reserve wholesale for the $50+ tier where bulk ordering offsets the wholesale discount. Do not wholesale your $35 products unless you are moving 30+ units per order. The per-unit math is too tight.
